a Complicated, Beautiful character
Nomi Nickel, played brilliantly by Erin Moon in the Libby audiobook version, is amazing. Miriam Toews has once again opened a world shaped by gender, religion, culture... that many of us live down the street from, yet know nothing about. At the same time, we can easily draw similarities and lessons to our own cultures and experiences.
Nomi tells her family's story with honesty, insights and emotion that betrays her years. You will want to root for every member of her nuclear family, and have revenge on a few others.
This is my third Miriam Toews novel, and I can't wait for more. I'm curious to see the infamous Women Talking film release, directed by Sarah Polley with a top-tier cast.
